Happy Instagram Moments

Have we talked about my slate board lately? This Have we talked about my slate board lately?

This is a little behind the scenes of our out of the box homeschool high
school post. πŸ€“

When I was a classroom science teacher, I adored my slate board. I taught in an older section of the school building and had a long slate board that was amazing. When the building was torn down, I wanted to see if I could save the slate, but it was gone already. 😟

Fast forward a few months, and we were able to save this one from the
landfill. πŸ’•

It's not always Instagram beautiful, being freshly washed and white trimmed with fancy lettering and quippy quotes. 😬

But, it's always been a friendly work horse. πŸ’™

Before this slate was put up, we used a white board by the kitchen table.
You knew you were in for a treat if Dad asked for the marker to explain
something. πŸ‘

Now, our teens will ask for the chalkboard explanation. They're always the best!

It brings back fond memories and they know they'll get more than they need
to fill up their knowledge bucket. 😎

We're gearing up to give this room a makeover and this centerpiece isn't
going anywhere! πŸ’™

I'm pretty sure it's going in my will. β™₯️ #savetheslate

What do you do about all the hours of unstructured What do you do about all the hours of unstructured project time your teen craves?

As a parent of out of the box, differently wired, gifted teens, you've probably asked yourself this question often. πŸ€”

Maybe you even ask it daily as your teen escapes to their work space to get lost in the work yet again. 😬

πŸ‘‰Does your teen avoid conventional school work?

πŸ‘‰Does your teen naturally lean toward big, engaging projects?

πŸ‘‰Do you have a hard time steering them toward the other work that *should* be getting done?

Let's talk about it!

We’re doing a deep dive into:

βœ…What to do with that time your teen needs

βœ…Why your teen craves unstructured work time

βœ…How much unstructured time is ok

βœ…How to count that project time for high school credit

The snow crystals . . . come to us not only to rev The snow crystals . . . come to us not only to reveal the wondrous beauty of the minute in Nature, but to teach us that all earthly beauty is transient and must soon fade way. But though the beauty of the snow is evanescent, like the beauties of the autumn, as of the evening sky, it fades but to come again.  – Wilson Bentley ❄️

When it snows, I check the crystal shapes and if there’s a shot of getting good pictures, I brave the cold and set up my equipment. πŸ”¬πŸ–ŒοΈ

One of the key ingredients in the high school year One of the key ingredients in the high school years in our homeschool is authentic engagement with something they love. πŸ’™

We encourage our teens to look for ways to incorporate community connection into their goal seeking experiences. 🀩

It works. πŸ‘

Not only do our teens meet their personal expectations with a goal, but they add to it a connection component that is so important.

Our daughter spent high school immersed in the world of fashion design. She arrived there at a young age and hit her stride in her teen years, designing for local runway shows and being chosen for a curated exhibit at our local library with industry professionals and local design students. πŸ‘—πŸ§΅

While pursuing design, she had this other thread running with #4H, being a student member of our Plant & Environmental Science programming committee. She served there five years helping to plan, teaching at workshops, and as a 4-Her, participating in horticulture contests at the local, state, and national levels and bringing home ribbons! πŸŒΏπŸ…πŸŽ–

Rebecca adores wild plants and ecology! When she arrived at university, she knew she still wanted to study plants along with her fashion design. 😍

She's taken classes in forensic botany and natural plant dyes, worked to cultivate and harvest the department's dye garden, and she was chosen as the designer for a team working on a grant to reforest hemlock trees devastated by an invasive insect species. 🦟🌲

That grant work came full circle since she helped to plan a 4-H workshop on that insect species and the damage it's doing to the Eastern Hemlock. 🀩

Rebecca designed, patterned, and constructed a vest to fit on dogs to release seeds onto hillsides that are deforested of their hemlocks. Did you know hemlocks thrive on steep terrain? Her task was to create a pattern that dog owners could replicate and place on their dogs to let them romp and drop seeds where humans cannot go. πŸΉπŸŒΏπŸ’™

Recently, I was talking with her about her work in high school and how it prepared her for the work she's doing now.

Her response? Unique opportunities in high school lead to unique opportunities in college. πŸ’™

I could not agree more! πŸ‘‡
Happy Saturday and welcome to all of you who are n Happy Saturday and welcome to all of you who are new this week! 😍

My name is Heather and I’m a mom to four kids ages 22 to 15. I’ve been blogging for just about 15 years at BlogSheWrote.org. Before becoming a mom, I was a professional science educator teaching middle and high school biology. πŸ”¬I have an undergraduate degree in biological sciences and a master's in curriculum and instruction, secondary education. πŸ’™

Our two oldest are off to university with big scholarships, honors college designations, and an Ivy League admission. Their big dreams didn’t stop us from homeschooling differently. πŸ’™

This year we’re homeschooling a senior and a sophomore. I just finished the last time through Algebra II. Sniff. They grow up so fast! πŸ˜‚

Just like my kids, my blog has grown up and now I offer encouragement to families homeschooling high school. Woot! 🀩

My specialty is helping you to homeschool out of the box teens with a different approach so you can watch them soar toward their dreams, no matter what that looks like post high school. ✌️

We use an authentic, goal oriented, community connected, knowledge and experience seeking strategy to meet our teens where they are and get them to where they want to be! πŸ‘Š

All four of our kids have chronic challenges from varying levels of neurodiversity and neurological infectious diseases that changed our approach to high school and their launch into the world beyond our homeschool. I love to help moms who have sick teens!πŸ₯³

In this space, I share our story and homeschool snapshots,

encouragement as you homeschool high school,

and information about the resources I have for you including three self-paced courses all about planning, implementing, and packaging a personalized homeschool high school that your teen envisions,

along with a membership where I offer mentoring through the courses and our live calls and online community. πŸ™Œ

When you click through my profile, you’ll find all these resources plus the 14 years of homeschooling goodness I want to share with you! πŸ’™

Come for free guides, STEM materials, nature courses, and a free writer’s workshop.

I hope to see you in the comments! 😍
