The Ultimate Guide to Teaching Sewing in Your Homeschool

sewing ultimate

Sewing has been a staple of our homeschooling since our daughter was 8 years old and did a sewing project with her grandmother. It was the first thing she tried that she wanted to do again. Since that time we’ve been pouring in to this interest and it’s grown. I love to share what we’ve learned along the way and how we’ve helped to mentor her to her fashion designer status. Welcome to The Ultimate Guide to Teaching Sewing in Your Homeschool.

Adventures in Sewing

Putting together a big box of sewing adventure can be a great way to start out with sewing for kids who show an interest. This post has a lot to offer. For example:

  • Materials to have on hand to start
  • Resources for finding projects
  • How to host a sewing camp with friends
  • Sewing with boys
  • Tips on sewing machines (which kind to buy)
  • Sewing resources for young children

  • Choosing & Learning a Sewing Machine– How to find the right sewing machine for your family. What to look for, how much to spend, etc.

  • Finding Mentors with More Expertise– Don’t sew? Then you might want to tap into other resources, but you CAN help your student to learn by providing materials, time, and space.
  • Beginner Projects & Project Resources– A post dedicated to projects and how to get more projects. Enjoy!

Incorporating Sewing into Your Homeschool Curriculum

We look for ways to include sewing in Rebecca’s other studies. Here’s a sampling of the work she’s done.

  • The Making of a Wizard & The Crafty Side of Math– This post tells how we do math for a creative soul. A must read for those of you with creative children!
  • Steampunk Fashion Design & Drafting– A unit on Jules Verne and the study of a fashion movement.
  • Middle Ages Fashions– More on studying history and fashion with authentic costuming resources
  • Eco-Fashion Design Project– A contest in which Rebecca incorporates denim into a unique garment
  • Eco-Fashion Runway Show– Rebecca participate in a fashion show as a designer and model for the local contest. Which led to an invitation for her dress to be in a curated show.
  • Make Your Own Egyptian Dress– A short tutorial on making an authentic ancient Egyptian garment.

How about you? Lots of moms teaching high school tell me they're intimidated by high school science requirements. 😬

I understand.

It's a big deal to work in all the things your teen needs to know. πŸ‘Š

But, you know I'm all about approaching high school differently and science is no exception in our homeschool. 🀩

Right now, my Nature Journaling Course at the Masterpiece Society is at a discount. If you like the idea of approaching middle and high school biology or environmental science through the lens of nature journaling, this course is for you. πŸπŸ¦‹πŸŒΏπŸΎ

Creativity IS a messy process and sometimes the finished products are so few and far between, we worry about how much time is wasted when there's other boxes to check on the high school list. βœ…

But, here's the thing. Our creative teens are always learning. Failed, messy, chaotic projects are the learning pathways that make a huge difference for our teens. πŸ™Œ

Reading with my teens is the single most valuable Reading with my teens is the single most valuable activity in our homeschool. πŸ“š

Whether we are reading aloud together or reading in a book club style, fashioning our conversation around shared story worlds has given us countless opportunities for staying connected.πŸ˜πŸ™Œ

It doesn't have to be difficult literature. It doesn't have to meet the typical choice for teens and young adults. It doesn't even have to meet an expectation for what teen guys or girls might like. πŸ’™

Some of our best reading conversations happen when my teen boys read Little Women or Anne of Green Gables. I think my next reading adventure with them will be a Jane Austen title. You haven't lived until you hear the running commentary from your teens on classics like these! πŸ˜‚
